S3 Partners released some new Tesla short information, now no longer the most shorted stock in terms of overall short interest falling to third, but when it comes to the percent of the overall float, Tesla sits at number six of the top 25 most shorted companies. In case you're new to the Tesla story though, if you go back to 2018, the short interest as a percent of Tesla's float at the time was 26%. So yes, the dollar value of about $18.5 billion is higher now, but as a percent of the overall float, much lower. Fun fact, Tesla shorts were down $12.5 billion in 2023 marked to market losses, or down 64.5% on an average short interest of $18.9 billion. Overall, shorts down $61.9 billion since 2010.
We know the Model 3 performance is supposed to come with new sport seats that have been touched on a few times. Now we've seen one of these seats in the real world in a test vehicle in Europe. This image from Drive Tesla Canada is one of these sport seats that Tesla accidentally revealed in the Model S Plaid Service Manual last year.
The latest Model 3 performance upgrade expectations from Tesla Scope, a newly designed rear spoiler, an updated user interface for track mode, along with other hardware changes that they could not share. It may also include an upgraded suspension, an upgraded motor, suspected to be a plaid motor, sport brakes, and a new wheel design. And no promises with this one, but based on recent rumors, an announcement could come this month, and if it does, deliveries could begin as soon as March.
Here's the actual post from Fidel, and unfortunately, it's not the best quality. Still plenty of debate on if this could be ludicrous or plaid. Last year, very briefly, we saw the ludicrous badging on the upgraded performance Model 3. And if you're looking for the distinction between ludicrous and plaid, here it is, it's understandable why people often get them confused. Personally, I still have all of this in the rumor category, but Fidel did say he can confirm there's no perforation in those seats. Matthew D.R., who has had some good information in the past, also added in addition to the bucket seat style. This should be a serious upgrade relative to the prior version, with light forged wheels with the potential option for carbon, with summer performance tires, and additional airl for added downforce on the body. No word on which markets globally may see the Model 3 performance first, but there's a chance by the end of Q1, it's available somewhere.
Gary Black is having a frustrating start to 2024, with price cuts in China, and now price cuts for the Model Y across most of Europe. In Germany, a market under the microscope for Tesla right now, the long range and performance were cut by around $5,400, or about 8-9%, the rear wheel drive cut around $2,000 or 4%. For other countries like France, Denmark, Netherlands, Norway, and Italy, the average price cut for the Model Y has been right around 7%. Fortunately for some consumers in Italy, some variants of the Model Y will now qualify for an incentive program.
Some things to keep in mind, at least for now, the Model 3 is unchanged. When it comes to Model Y sales in Europe, in quarter four, they made up about 10% of Tesla's global deliveries. The word is around 2-thirds of new car sales in Germany are actually commercial for these corporate car purchases, where these OEMs have standing relationships with some of these corporations, where the OEMs are offering certain incentives. And right now, it sounds like Tesla is not an option for some of these corporations for whatever reason.
Price cuts always lead to margin compression talk, but we have to keep in mind Tesla's continual efforts to drive down its cost of goods sold, from Q2 2022 to Q2 of 2023, they've averaged about a 2% reduction in cost of goods sold per quarter. We have to keep in mind the end of subsidy programs in both Germany and France, in Germany specifically it was up to $7,300 for EVs. This was supposed to run until the end of 2024, but due to a court ruling in Germany blowing up the budget, they had to end it early. So in two of Tesla's bigger European markets, they may just be wanting to offset the loss of those subsidies. Higher borrowing costs are not just a problem in the United States, but across the EU as well. To combat this, Tesla is now offering 0% financing in Germany. In some countries, the Model Y is now the same price as a Model 3. So we'll see how long that lasts. The Model Y is in a quarterly sales decline in Germany. We'll show you that shortly.
BYD just announced some big price cuts in Germany itself. We talked about the China price cuts last week. A lot of people are speculating is Tesla clearing out inventory for the Juniper refresh. Personally, I've been expecting the Model Y refresh in the second half of this year, and these price cuts are for new vehicles, now in addition to some inventory discounts as well.
For Juniper, when the dealers start pooling Model Y's from test drives, that could be a good sign that the refresh is imminent if it follows the Model 3 arc. And look, I know not everybody likes the price cut strategy from Tesla, but they flat out told us this was what they were going to do no matter what happens to margins. They'll put the prices wherever they need to be to ensure that they can see continued volume growth, making Tesla vehicles more accessible to more people, hopefully ahead of a Robotaxi launch sometime in the next few years.
Just to show you, here's that 0% interest offer in Germany. This is from Troy Tesla showing us the global cost of goods sold for the Model 3 and Y. From quarter to 2022 to Q2 2023, they drove down COG's 8.1%, divided by 4 quarters, is roughly 2% per quarter. Plus, it's not just a one off, they've done this before as well. Then of course, we had the supply chain issues and the inflationary environment in between.
Now touching on Germany because it is something to watch. Yes, the Model Y was the best selling full be-ev in Germany for 2023, outselling the ID 4 and 5 combined. This chart from AJ on X. However, at the moment, the trend is not our friend in Germany when it comes to overall Tesla sales since Q4 of 2022, they've been on a sequential quarterly decline. Don't forget though, a lot of this decline was driven by the Model 3 and specifically the change over to the Model 3 plus, so we'll see how the first few quarters of this year pan out in Germany. Gransky-Methings not really a big deal, just something to keep an eye on and try to learn what's going on.
From Axios, Uber is now working with Tesla to encourage their drivers to switch to EVs. They're doing that by sharing data with Tesla where its drivers do most of their trips, starting in New York City, that'll help demonstrate where charging infrastructure is most needed. Uber is also offering drivers incentives up to $2,000 on the purchase of a Model 3 or Y and their hosting test drive events at select Tesla stores. These incentives are in addition to the IRA credits and Uber drivers will get a referral code to purchase a new Model 3 or Y directly from Tesla, they must take delivery by March 31st and complete 100 trips by May 15th to qualify.
Now, when you go to the Model S and X configurator on Tesla's website, the only free paint color option is Stealth Gray, all other options now again have a charge. As you can see with the way back machine dating back now a few months, all paint colors for the Model S and X were included. Since paint is a part of the vehicle, this now means that only the base Model X in Stealth Gray will actually qualify for the IRA tax credits. Any other color option and you lose the full credit. The Model S of course does not qualify for the tax credits but same situation with the paint colors.
Sawyer may have gotten this from one of his followers but Tesla now has a self-serve demo drive program for people with destination chargers. You can now host these self-serve demo drives at your property. Tesla has been doing self-serve demo drives now for some time but this is specifically for destination charger owners. Tesla will provide the property owners with up to four Tesla demo drive vehicles. Tesla will schedule, manage and maintain the self-serve demo drive appointments and vehicles for property owner at no cost. Current sites host an average of 35 plus demo drives per week. You'll have the opportunity to generate additional revenue from demo drivers who utilize your on-site amenities during their visit. This is a pretty cool idea. Just think about all of the hotel owners who have destination chargers. Now they can have a few Tesla vehicles on-site. That Tesla by the way is managing and taking care of. Then their customers staying at their hotel while they're just hanging out. Maybe with not much to do. They can actually go test drive a Tesla and charge it on those destination chargers bringing in a hotel's more revenue. Plus not just hotels but anywhere with a destination charger.
This article from CNEV Post was going around today talking about CATL and BYD in a race to drive down the cost of battery cells which on the surface is a great thing. But when you actually read the article they're referring to these square LFP cells more importantly these are destined for vehicles between about 14 and 28 thousand dollars. So at least for right now most likely not impactful for Tesla. They did say however as BYD and CATL work to drive down battery costs smaller battery makers are poised to follow and the cost of batteries will be reduced further.
This one about the Model 3 Plus in Australia potentially facing a stop sale.
这篇文章讨论的是澳大利亚可能停止销售Model 3 Plus的情况。
We actually talked about this now a week or two ago. It has to do with the new Model 3 Plus not having that child seat anchor point for the middle seat in the back actually accessible. No need to dive into this again but it sounds like there may be a ruling on this.
Jim Rowan the CEO of Volvo Cars remains confident of tremendous growth in the electric vehicle market noting particularly strong demand in Europe.
沃尔沃汽车首席执行官吉姆·罗恩对电动汽车市场的巨大增长保持着信心,并特别强调了欧洲地区需求的强劲。
BMW just said demand for its luxury cars powered by gasoline reached the highest point last year and expects all electric models to lead future growth. Their CFO said the tipping point for combustion engines was last year. The future volume growth will primarily come from battery electric vehicles. The current sales plateau of combustion cars will continue and then fall off slightly. Bear in mind next year BMW is looking to roll out its new EV platform that's targeting having battery costs.
Just dropping it on your radar if any of you are interested in the van life the Ram Pro Master EV is unveiled for 2024 so information is out there the Super Bowl is right around the corner and VW is now confirmed to have an ad spot they're celebrating 75 years of sales in the United States. This will be their first Super Bowl ad in almost a decade. So far Kia is only the third automaker to confirm an ad by following VW and BMW who's also expected to plug in EV in its ad. Tesla happened to share this video today and not at all that I think this should be the ad but I'm curious how many of you think Tesla should run a Super Bowl ad.
BYD is looking to invest $14 billion to develop new smart car features one of which will be furthering the development of what they call navigation on autopilot which will allow drivers to take their hands off the wheel and their feet off the pedals in certain scenarios. Today we got a bit more information on the autonomous rollout in select Chinese cities. Beijing is encouraging selected cities to set up to 200 testing spots for smart cars, reserved parking spots for cars that can park themselves and test 200 driver less cars. They're touting X-Pang as one of the most advanced Chinese manufacturers when it comes to smart driving and their system has been rolled out to 52 cities nationwide but they are using LIDAR sensors and cameras.
I'm still scouring for information on what's up with charging in Chicago. Luckily Kyle Connor from out of spec bought a flight and is now on the ground in Chicago so we'll see what he comes up with.
A trend we're seeing for many different automakers Rivian is now offering leasing for the R1s and R1c. They're also saying that yes the $7,500 IRA credit will be applied to the capital cost reduction for the lease.
Tesla's say website is now live for quarter four questions. I'll have the link below right now. The top three number one the next gen platform might we see it sometime in 2025 to when will optimists be deployed in a gigafactory and three what's been the barrier to ramping 4680 sales into the multi million sales per week rate and when do you expect to get there.
