Why Are Some Companies Giving Up On Robotaxis?

摘要
Tesla has been pitching robotaxis as the future of public transportation across the urban cores of the world. Tesla has been working hard on developing robotaxis over the past several years, and this has encouraged many competitors to develop their own autonomous vehicles. However, more recently, some of these late entrants are starting to pull back on their robotaxi plans. Some of these companies have completely ditched their efforts in developing robotaxis and autonomy as a whole while others are simply focusing on the private autonomy market. One of the key reasons for this transition is the realization that the robotaxi market may not be as large as initially expected. Most people prefer to own their own car even if it is more expensive due to the massive convenience car ownership offers. Thus, it's not clear if there will be a massive transition to robotaxis like Tesla proposes. This isn't to say that Tesla can't be successful in the robotaxi market; however, it seems like robotaxis will simply be another transportation option, not a dominating transportation option. This video explains the various pros and cons of pursuing robotaxis and why some legacy automakers and rideshare providers are pulling back from robotaxi development.
