摘要

Today, Lockheed Martin is the largest defense contractor in the US pulling in over $40 billion from the US alone in 2020. But, how did Lockheed Martin get to a position where they're worth $102 billion employing over 110,000 employees? Well, Lockheed and Martin were actually two separate companies that have histories dating back to 1912. Two brothers named Allan and Malcolm Lockheed were drawn to designing aircrafts as a passion. Given the minimal demand for aircrafts from the general public, the brothers eventually landed on selling aircrafts to the US military. Meanwhile, Martin corporation was founded by an aviator named Glenn L. Martin. Martin also had a dream of growing a large aircraft company, and though they had a great run during World War 1, Martin Corporation wouldn't do as well during World War 2. This lead Martin Corporation to pivot to missile and space technology which they sold to NASA and the US military. Eventually, after the USSR collapsed, Martin and Lockheed decided to merge in order to minimize the impact of decreased demand from the US military. Surprisingly though, despite their worries, demand only grew through the early 2000s which allowed Lockheed Martin to grow into the behemoth they are today. This video explains the history of Lockheed Martin and how they were able to grow to become the largest defense contractor in the US.
