Papa Francisco has picked up speed on behalf of the Pope: she is the best-equipped hospital ship in the entire Brazilian Amazon region. Along the largest river in the world, she will serve over 1000 communities. Even where no medical aid has been given so far.
The demand is enormous: many river-dwellers need a whole day by boat to visit the next doctor or a simple hospital in the city. And there, they often have to wait days for treatment.
Up to 700,000 people will now be reached by Pope Francis in the north Brazilian state of Pará, an area larger than Germany. The bishop of Óbidos, Johannes Bahlmann, a German Franciscan, co-developed and promoted the idea of the ship hospital.
Soon after, the Brazilian Franciscans of Divine Providencecommissioned the ship to be built. And now, the hospital ship with the motto 'healing and proclamation' is making its voyage to the Amazon. Deutsche Welle was given unique access for this first voyage.
